Meet Grupo Folklórico de LMU
Who are we?
Formed in 1972 at Loyola Marymount University, Grupo Folklórico de LMU, also known as GFLMU, has been spreading the beauty and joy of Mexican folklore dance with audiences everywhere. We are an entirely student run organization comprised of talented and passionate university students. Our group perfoms at university events and in the wider Los Angeles area. Every academic year, we work tirelessly to prepare for our annual spring showcase, Sueño de Mexico, which is open to everyone in the community. Welcome to our page and we hope you enjoy our beautiful dancers!
What is baile folklórico?
Baile folklórico, also known as ballet folklórico, is a term that refers to traditional Mexican folk dances. Each region in Mexico has its own stylistically-distinctive dances with unique vestuarios. One example is the state of Jalisco, commonly known for its Jarabe Tapatío where female dancers wear a china poblana outifit and male dancers are dressed as charros. As a whole, baile folklórico is a tradition that has been passed on through generations and it is considered a defining element of Mexican popular culture.

Here at GFLMU, we welcome LMU students from all backgrounds and walks of life to join our organization. No previous dance experience is necessary to join, just a positive attitude and willingness to learn. If you are interested in joining, feel free to email us at grupofolklorico.lmu@gmail.com.
